Superion® is a new minimally invasive treatment for lumbar stenosis that fills the gap between conservative care and invasive surgery. Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, compressing the nerves travelling through the lower back into the legs. It is often typically a degenerative condition that affects patients 50 and older and is categorized with symptoms that may include; pain, weakness, stiffness or numbness in the legs, calves or buttocks, and difficulty walking or standing. In rare cases, loss of motor function of the legs and/or loss of normal bowel or bladder function may occur.
The Superion® implant acts as an indirect decompression device and is implanted through a small dime-sized tube to reduce tissue damage and blood loss. Its anatomic design provides optimal fit and preserves a patient’s anatomy and ability to maintain motion. It acts as an extension blocker or spacer, relieving pressure on the affected nerves. Superion® is available in multiple sizes to accommodate varying anatomical structure and is shown to be an effective alternative when conservative treatment has failed and invasive surgery too aggressive.
